The Benefits of Standard Microneedling vs. PRP

We offer two versions of our favorite spa treatment: Microneedling with PRP and without. The results and evidence are strong for both iterations, but the big questions remain: What's the difference? Why choose one over the other? What can you expect regarding the process, downtime and results? What's right for your skin?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that involves the use of a physician grade device called the Skin Pen that contains fine needles. The fine needles of this device are used to minimally puncture the skin, which creates a controlled skin injury. In these microscopic punctures, a channel is created that triggers the body to fill these microscopic wounds by producing new collagen and elastin. Even when the procedure includes no topical treatment, the rush of collagen and elastin to heal these microscopic wounds improves the skin’s appearance and reduces signs of aging. This Procedure is AMAZING for improving skin texture and firmness, fine lines and wrinkles, and crepey skin around eyes. Microneedling has also been proven to provide a reduction in scarring, pore size, and stretch marks. Hypertrophic and dyspigmented burn scars on the body, face, arms, and legs have also shown to be receptive to treatments! This is truly a treatment for everyone and can help anyone from the ages of 16 to 60! (and up!) Microneedling can be done on areas of skin that may not be suitable for peeling or laser resurfacing, such as around the eyes and mouth, hands, and chest. Microneedling is well tolerated by clients with minimal downtime, and can be easily personalized by going deeper on some areas where skin damage requires a more aggressive approach. The forehead and bridge of your nose tend to be the most sensitive, but for the most part you'll just feel small vibrations and find this treatment very comfortable. Immediately after the procedure, you'll be pink or red comparable to a sunburn and may want to lay low the rest of the day. By the following morning you can go back to your normal routine and use a gentle cleanser, SPF and even apply a little makeup if you wish! Usually, multiple treatments will be necessary for the best results with Microneedling. The number of sessions depends on your skin condition. Three or four treatments may be recommended for mild to moderate acne scarring, whereas deeper scars and stretch marks may require upward of five treatments!

The only difference between our Standard Microneedling and our PRP Microneedling is the addition of PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma! Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets in the blood that are crucial to the healing of wounds. Our blood is made of two main components: red blood cells, and plasma. The plasma contains white blood cells and platelets, which are rich in growth factors. Growth factors play the role of messengers, signaling skin cells to function. For our Microneedling with PRP, a small amount of blood is drawn from you. It is then is placed into a centrifuge and spun at a very high speed to isolate the growth factors, which helps stimulate collagen and elastin. The PRP is then applied topically to the skin while the treatment is being done. When used for skin rejuvenation, PRP releases growth factors into the skin to naturally speed up your body’s own repair processes and stimulates new collagen and elastin as well! The addition of PRP immediately after your Microneedling will increase the efficacy of the treatment and can better treat acne scars and deep lines. Applying PRP after microneedling is more effective than direct injections of PRP to your skin, as the micro-channels allow even distribution across the treatment area as well as absorption into deeper layers of the skin. When PRP is placed into the skin during our microneedling, it initiates a localized stem cell response. Over the weeks and months following treatment, this stem cell response recruits collagen-producing cells called fibroblasts. The fibroblasts replace tissue that has been damaged or lost through the aging process with healthy skin that looks refreshed and rejuvenated. Several studies have compared the effects of microneedling with and without the application of PRP, and the results are clear!

One study performed a split-face comparison of 50 patients with atrophic acne scars. On the right side, microneedling was performed followed by topical application of PRP, and on the left side, microneedling was performed with no PRP. The study included 3 treatment sessions with 1 month between each session. Scars were assessed using the Goodman and Baron scale, which is designed to grade the severity of post-acne scarring. Scars on the right side improved by 62.2% and scars on the left side improved by 45.8%; prior to treatment, both sides demonstrated similar severity scores, but final severity scores were significantly reduced in the microneedling plus PRP group relative to the standard microneedling group. In another split-face study, 12 adult patients were evaluated with acne scars. The right side of the face received microneedling plus PRP, while the left side received microneedling alone. Two treatments were performed 8 weeks apart. Severity scores (0 would mean no lesions; with 10 being maximum severity) were used to assess outcomes throughout the study. Acne scars improved on both sides of the face following the treatment period, but the reduction in scar severity with microneedling plus PRP (3.5 points) was significantly greater than with microneedling alone (2.6 points)!

As a treatment for scarring, fine lines, and wrinkles, both microneedling and PRP work well. However, their true power is unleashed when used together, as benefits are clearly amplified and healing time is reduced! So how do you choose? Microneedling is a great place to start if you are new to these types of services. If you hate having your blood drawn or the "red mask" makes you squeamish, stick to microneedling. If you are ready to take your results to the next level, PRP is the icing on the cake without having to deal with any major downtime!
