Give Your Skin Some Slough Love

Everyday single day, we battle two kinds of aging: chronological and sun-damage. Sun damage affects everyone, bar none. In fact, even if you stay indoors most of the time, the sun can still get to you when you drive. Unless you are wearing sunscreen you absorb the 30% of sun rays that are not blocked by the driver's side window leading to early development of wrinkles , crow's feet, dark spots, and the exacerbation of melasma. And as we grow older, we see more drab than glow because cells do not regenerate as fast leading to rough skin that needs a nudge to get younger cells to the surface.

At Juvly, we believe that anti-aging and detoxifying the skin involves preventive skincare, exfoliation, resurfacing, and renewal.  Sounds simple? Not really - we are literally flooded with a variety of products, that promise to be the elixir of youth. This is why we always stress the importance of taking the time to sit down with a skilled and experienced consultant to discuss aesthetic goals and skin problems. Everyone's skin is different - some are fair, dark, sensitive, blemished, acne-prone, dry, oily, thin, smooth, rough, supple, and wrinkled. At Juvly, we understand that needs are different and so it's never a "one-size-fits-all"solution.  During this session, your skin is analyzed by an expert and a customized plan is created to achieve the best results. We have spa services that assist with exfoliation. Mechanical exfoliation include  dermaplaning, facials, and microdermabrasion. These remove the other layers composed of dead cells resulting to brighter-looking and smoother skin.

At home, use only gentle cleansers - but if you use scrubs, select one that contains rounded granules because those with rough edges can cause microtears that can get infected by bacteria and cause an acne outbreak.  Your skin needs a lot of TLC so be gentle when you buff. Avoid the eyes if the scrubbing hurts, you're doing it all wrong. Listen to your skin. If you are acne-prone, it's fine to exfoliate daily. If you have dry or sensitive skin, once a week is safer. However, if you are flaking after a treatment (e.g  microneedling, peels, or laser), you should moisturize using a hypoallergenic product like Cerave and add on a healing one like Skin Medica's TNS Complex.

To  hasten the shedding of dead or matured cells, the bonds that bind can be dissolved by exfoliators found in cleansers, moisturizers, peels, and serums. Most of these contain an acid like salicylic (for acne), glycolic, lactic, alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids in addition to fruit enzymes like bromelain (pineapple) or papain (papaya). Aside from speeding up the process of skin renewal, these acids and enzymes also lighten spots and evens skin texture. Those with sensitive skin should stick to formulation that do not contain enzymes. Retinoic acid is an effective anti-ager but can cause inflammation, irritation, redness, and flaking.  When this happens, skip a few days, and resume - but less frequently. The skin always knows.
