8 Blemishes and Discoloration Treated by Lasers

Lasers such as the Cutera and Lumenis 22 are truly cutting edge and have opened the doors for individuals whose blemishes and discolorations could not be treated previously. The IPL module of the Lumenis 22 uses Sapphire Cool Light Guides that makes the treatment more comfortable and safer.

IPL works well on pigmented lesions, unwanted hair, vascular lesions, rosacea, and effects of sun damage like age spots and fine lines or wrinkles.  ResurFx is another Lumenis M22 module that is non-ablative, meaning, it doesn't remove any surface cells. ResurFx works on the deeper layes of the skin where it stimulates collagen growth. The end result is smoother, brighter skin with smaller pores and diminished lines and blemishes.  ResurFx is recommended for conditions treated by IPL and additionally on acne scars and skin laxity.

It only takes a single pass and several seconds per spot. Treatment may take 20 minutes to one hour, depending on the condition. Numbing is done and the procedure is well-tolerated. Some redness, warmth, and swelling may occur. Patients' experiences vary - from little downtime and no scabbing to mild symptoms lasting a week. Skin will be a little sensitive after the procedure and wearing sunscreen is a must.  In more senior patients, when laser treatment is done with Botox and Fillers, the results are amazing - and can delay any surgical intervention for many years!

Although vitiligo and melasma are difficult to treat with lasers, there are many frustrating conditions like vasuclar and pigmented lesions that are grealy improved with laser treatment.  Pulses, duration, and depth are customized to the lesion treated and the skin color of the patient. When before only those with lighter skin can be treated, fine adjustments make it possible to treat safely and efffectively, men and women of color.  Lesions and discolorations that respond well to laser  treatment are:

  • Telangiectasia,
  • Freckles,
  • Hematomas,
  • Age spots,
  • Rosacea,
  • Undereye darkness,
  • Stretch marks, and
  • Acne scars.
